Below you will find guidelines from TASO State regarding inclement weather as to whether or not matches should start or be continued once started.
Here are some basic guidelines to be considered:
- A chapter may not create weather data statistics such as chill factor alone as a basis for not starting a match.
- The decision to start or not start a match is the decision of the Game Administrator. Certainly, the officials should have input in the decision, but the final decision is NOT up to the officials.
- If weather conditions worsen after the match begins, it is the officials’ decision when and if player (and officials) safety becomes a concern, the officials may “suspend” the match.
- If it is a temporary condition, then the officials should confer with the coaches if the match may resume. If the match cannot continue, then the officials will “suspend” the match.
Please take note of the term “suspend” as opposed to “terminate”. It is up to the schools and/or the District Executive Committee whether to resume a match at a later date. “Suspending” a match provides them that option where “termination” may not. Regardless of the term, we accomplish the purpose of stopping the match in unsafe weather conditions.
IF A CONTEST IS POSTPONED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER AND CONTINUED THE FOLLOWING DAY, OFFICIALS SHALL RECEIVE MILEAGE FOR EACH DAY, BUT ONLY ONE GAME FEE. IF A DIFFERENT CREW IS ASSIGNED FOR THE FOLLOWING DAY, BOTH CREWS SHALL RECEIVE THE FULL GAME FEE AS WELL AS MILEAGE.
